This research project is titled: ‘Civic Life of Young Australian Muslims: Active Citizenship, Community Belonging and Social Inclusion’. It is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant (2011-2013) and is led by Monash University’s Associate Professor Anita Harris, an ARC Future Fellow.
This research project investigates the everyday ways young Australian Muslims contribute to community building and participate in civic life. Unlike the more common focus on exclusion and disadvantage, this project investigates the dynamic range of ways young Australian Muslims actively participate in civic life and establish belonging in community.
It expands youth studies’ approaches to new citizenship practices and challenges assumptions about Muslim youth and disengagement by looking at everyday, informal, cultural and subcultural acts of citizenship.
