Determining Your Entry Level

There are several entry points in the Chinese language sequence to cater for those from absolute beginner to native speaker level. In order that you obtain the maximum benefit from your study experience, it is crucial that you enrol at your appropriate level. There are several steps in the enrolment process to ensure this:

  1. Complete language background questionnaire. This in no way affects your eligibility to enrol in Chinese but helps us to gain a better picture of your learning needs to place you at your correct level. (required of all students)
  2. Complete the placement test (if directed to do so).
  3. You will be contacted by email within a few days of submitting the placement test to inform you of the unit in which you are approved to enrol. (so please double check that your contact details are correct before submitting the questionnaire)

If you have enrolled yourself, or if you have been enrolled by your Faculty, unless you are an absolute beginner with no knowledge of Chinese, your enrolment is only provisional and you must complete the above steps in order to have your enrolment confirmed.

The placement test is a diagnostic exercise to determine the most appropriate level at which you should enrol, so it is in your best interests to complete the test honestly, to the best of your ability. It will in no way affect your marks or eligibility to take Chinese. You may return to a previous section of the test at any time.
