Prizes in Ukrainian Studies at Monash University

Excellent students in Ukrainian Studies receive prizes in recognition of their achievements. The first prizes to be established were memorial prizes in honour of benefactors of Ukrainian Studies at Monash University Stepan Soldat, Vasyl and Stefania Fokshan, and Joseph and Eugenia Pona. The 1991 University Calendar carried a description of these three prizes. The Ilko Prystasz Memorial Prize was established subsequently, as was the Dr Anna Berehulak Memorial Scholarship.

Ilko Prystasz Memorial Prize

The prize, honouring the memory of Ilko Prystasz, a benefactor of Ukrainian Studies at Monash, is provided by the Ukrainian Studies Support Fund. It is usually valued at $250 and is awarded to a student enrolled in Ukrainian Studies units at second year level for best results in first year Ukrainian at the introductory level, provided they are of a sufficiently high standard. The award is made in March.

Stepan Soldat Memorial Prize

The prize, honouring the memory of Stepan Soldat, a benefactor of Ukrainian Studies at Monash, is provided by the Ukrainian Studies Support Fund. It is usually valued at $250 and is awarded to a student enrolled in Ukrainian Studies units at second year level for best results in first year Ukrainian at the intermediate level, provided they are of a sufficiently high standard. The award is made in March.

Vasyl and Sefania Fokshan Memorial Prize

The prize, honouring the memory of Vasyl and Stefania Fokshan, benefactors of Ukrainian Studies at Monash, is provided by the Ukrainian Studies Support Fund. It is usually valued at $250 and is awarded to a student enrolled in Ukrainian Studies units at third year level for best results in second year Ukrainian, provided they are of a sufficiently high standard. The award is made in March.

Joseph and Eugenia Pona Prize

The prize is offered by the Ukrainian Studies Support Fund in honour of Joseph and Eugenia Pona, benefactors of Ukrainian Studies at Monash. It is normally valued at $500 and is awarded to a student undertaking fourth year Honours with a thesis on a Ukrainian topic. The prize is awarded on merit as attested by the student’s academic record over the first three years of study. The award is made in March.

The Dr Anna Berehulak Memorial Scholarship

The Scholarship is funded by the Ukrainian Studies Foundation in Australia Ltd. and the Mykola Zerov Centre for Ukrainian Studies, Monash University. It is dedicated to the memory of Dr Anna Berehulak (1967-1999), a graduate of Monash University and the author of several publications on Ukrainian literature. Its aim is to encourage students of Ukrainian literature in Australia to complete an Honours degree in Ukrainian Studies as a first step to graduate research in this discipline. A maximum of one Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student enrolled for Honours or Combined Honours in the Mykola Zerov Centre for Ukrainian Studies at Monash University. The successful applicant for the Scholarship will complete an Honours thesis on a topic in Ukrainian literature or a related topic.
