Five students of Ukrainian Studies at Monash University are attending the 2016 Summer School of Ukrainian Language and Culture at Lviv’s Ukrainian Catholic University.
Ukrainian intermediate students Eddie Amiet, Tessa Benn and Jacob Moharram, as well as students of Ukrainian proficient Alice Jefimenko and Jared Malec are taking part in the June-July three-week session of the School.
In contrast to previous years, a significant part of this year’s tuition is taking place at Yaremche in the Carpathian Mountains. Students report on intensive Ukrainian language sessions interspersed with visits to museums and, among other excursions, an ascent of Mount Hoverla.
In 2016 each student attending has received financial support from the Friends of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine Committee, the Ukrainian Studies Foundation in Australia, and Monash University’s Study Abroad scheme.
Monash Students have been attending the Summer Schools in Ukraine since 2008, and at UCU since 2011. In 2015 three students attended: Rosalie Marshall, Alice Jefimenko and Victoria Tsoi. Alice and Rosalie prepared a report in Ukrainian on their experiences, which may be downloaded here.
The Summer School is one of the major attractions of the Monash Ukrainian Studies undergraduate program of study. This year’s students of Ukrainian introductory are already considering the possibilities of attending.
