Migration Policing – Design

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and the NSW Police are key agencies with responsibility for enforcing immigration law.The research was conducted through a series of organisational case studies based around five police stations in New South Wales and the DIAC Compliance Office in Sydney.

The data gathering then ‘fanned out’ to examine links and relationships with other organisations that contribute to the discovery of ‘unlawful non citizens’, either through provision of information or active involvement in joint operations.

Altogether 65 interviews were conducted between November 2007 and February 2010.

A questionnaire was also completed by 371 operational police officers indicating the circumstances in which they conduct immigration status checks.
