Understanding Immigration Detention – Design

The project uses a mixed-method approach combining a survey design and administration with the ethnographic method in five Immigration removal centres: IRC Campsfield House, Colnbrook, Yarl’s Wood, Tinsley House and Book House.

Over an eighteen-month period, from November 2009 to June 2011, Professor Mary Bosworth spent on average 3 days per week in detention.

From July 2010 she worked together with a research officer, Dr Blerina Kellezi gathering over 180 surveys and interviewing more than 200 detainees and 40 staff.
