The Farzad Sharifian PhD Scholarship will be awarded to the best applicant (International applicant in the first instance) wishing to undertake a PhD degree in the field of Cultural Linguistics, with a focus on improving intercultural communication. The successful applicant will be affiliated with the HDR program of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, Monash University. The award will be on the basis of outstanding academic merit. The winner will receive a stipend (living allowance) equivalent to Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). If the winner is an international applicant, they will also be awarded a Faculty of Arts International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (FAIPRS), which covers tuition fees.
Professor Farzad Sharifian holds the Chair in Cultural Linguistics at Monash University. He is a pioneer and world authority on Cultural Linguistics and Applied Cultural Linguistics.
Professor Sharifian has published numerous articles in many leading international journals as well as edited volumes, and has received multiple awards for his research and postgraduate supervision, including the Edith Cowan University’s Research Medal and the Award for Excellence in Early Career Research of the Year, Faculty of Arts, Monash University (2008). He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Language and Culture.
Professor Sharifian was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship by the Australian Research Council (ARC) in 2003 and was awarded the prestigious Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, in 2012. In 2013, he was the winner of the Supervisor of the Year Award (Dean’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree by Research Supervision), Faculty of Arts, Monash University.
Applicants who are eligible to apply for scholarships at Monash University within the HDR program of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics are eligible to apply for this scholarship. One Farzad Sharifian PhD Scholarship will be offered annually and only full-time PhD candidates are eligible to hold this award.
