Dan Edwards, Sociology 2009

The experiences and opportunities available to me during my research degree within the Centre for Population and Urban Research (CPUR) meant Daniel Edwards DTP photo Mar2012 medthat when I had completed my thesis, my options for establishing a career were broader than what I had initially thought. My candidature within the School of Political and Social Inquiry (PSI) offered good opportunities to work alongside academics and postgraduate students in a research capacity as well as socially. I believe that the support I received from my supervisor and close colleagues during my research degree was the key reason that I persisted with and successfully completed my thesis. Having been able to work on an Australian Research Council grant during my PhD was a bonus, as was the other research work that I was able to undertake alongside my study helped me secure a job at the Australian Council for Educational Research. Five years later, I find myself in a Principal Research Fellow position, pursuing research in my chosen field with people across the world – thanks in many ways to the support and encouragement of my colleagues in PSI at Monash.
