Professor Lynette Russell, Deputy Associate Dean Research, Faculty of Arts, as chair, was delighted to welcome the 70 research leaders from the five Faculties who attended the Forum on the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Wednesday, 13 November.
The Forum was held at the Japanese Studies Centre on Monash University’s Clayton campus and featured presentations by Sir Bob Watson, Professor John Thwaites and Professor David Griggs. The presentations were followed by a workshop facilitated by Professor David Griggs.
The Forum provided an important backdrop to discuss the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will take effect in 2016, and to give researchers the opportunity to discuss how Monash could contribute to achieving the SDGs through its current and future interdisciplinary research strengths.
Speakers at the forum included:
• Sir Bob Watson – Sir Louis Matheson Professorial Fellow at Monash, Vice-chair of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and former Chair of the IPCC
• Professor John Thwaites – Chair of Monash Sustainability Institute and ClimateWorks Australia, and member of the SDSN Leadership Council
• Professor David Griggs – Director of Monash Sustainability Institute and CEO of ClimateWorks Australia.
