The Freie Universität Berlin was established in 1948 to promote intellectual freedom in post-war Europe. It is one of the leading research universities in Germany with particular strengths in the humanities and social sciences. Its performance in these disciplines is ranked in the top 50 in the Times Higher Education World University rankings.

The Joint Award PhD Program with the Department of Philosophy and Humanities, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, was established in 2012 to allow a unique learning and training experience for candidates in an overseas environment and to facilitate closer collaboration between the two institutions.

The Joint PhD Thesis Agreement  outlines the general conditions for candidature and examination, including the public oral examination process at the Freie Universität Berlin to be presented in person

Upon completion of the thesis examination and acceptance, the public oral examination will be conducted at Freie Universität Berlin, upon which the final grade will be determined. The testamur for this award is a joint testamur and will be produced in both English and German
