Assessment in Coursework Units Policy

Definitions

Ineligible item: For the purpose of review and remark of assessment items, the Faculty of Arts deems certain assessment items to be ineligible for review or remark. An assessment item is ineligible for review or remark if: the item has been reviewed; the item has been remarked; the item received a fail grade and has been verified accordingly; the item is a thesis in a research-track coursework degree, such an an honours thesis or graduate coursework research thesis, or graduate research project in an honours or graduate coursework degree, or an internship report in an honours degree; the item does not require significant academic judgement (e.g., multiple-choice quizzes). Students are able to submit a grievance, according to standard University process, to address concerns that they have about assessment that counts as an ineligible item. (Please note that assessment completed as part of an internship capstone unit in a graduate coursework degree is an eligible item; as part of an honours degree, the internship assessment is ineligible.)

A. Review of assessment item

  1. A student who is dissatisfied with the mark given for a piece of assessment may lodge a request with the unit coordinator for the piece of work to be reviewed. Requests must be lodged in writing no later than twenty University working days after the work made available for return to the student.
  2. Where a review is requested the corrected piece of work will be re-assessed by a reviewer appointed by the unit coordinator. The reviewer will have access to: the reason for the mark review request; the assessment criteria applicable to the item; the original mark awarded; the original marker’s comments on the item.
  3. The final assessment outcome for the item will be agreed between the original marker and the reviewer and they will agree to: increase the mark, or to confirm the mark originally awarded. The reviewed item cannot be given a revised mark that is lower than the mark originally awarded.
  4. The reviewer must note his/her name and signature on the assessment item. Items of reviewed assessment will not include comments from the reviewer.
  5. An item that has been reviewed is thereafter deemed to be ineligible for any further review or remark.

B. Remark of assessment item

  1. A student who is dissatisfied with the mark given for a piece of assessment may lodge a request with the unit coordinator for the piece of work to be remarked. Requests must be lodged in writing no later than twenty University working days after the work is made available for return to the student.
  2. Tests and examinations completed under invigilated conditions are ineligible for remarking.
  3. Where a remark is requested a member of academic staff with appropriate expertise will be appointed by the unit coordinator to assess the item in question. The second marker will be provided with a clean copy of the item of assessment and the criteria applicable to the assessment of the work. The second marker will not be informed of or provided with: the reason for the remark request; the original, corrected item of assessment; the original mark and grade awarded; the original marker’s comments on the item of assessment.
  4. The mark and grade awarded by the second marker will become the final mark and grade for the assessment item, notwithstanding the fact that this second mark may be lower than the mark originally awarded.
  5. The second marker must note his/her name and signature on the assessment item together with brief comments to the student on the quality of the work.
  6. An item that has been remarked is thereafter deemed to be ineligible for any further review or remark.

C. Verification of fail grade for a unit

  1. The University Unit Assessment Procedures require that all faculties have procedures for verification of assessment for students who receive an overall failing mark and grade for a unit (Item H.7).
  2. For students who receive a failing overall mark and grade in an Arts-owned unit, having completed all assessment items for the unit:
    1. If the student has failed any examination assessment item, that examination script should be reviewed.
    2. For any assessment item worth 30% or more of the final mark and grade, that assessment item should be reviewed.
    3. Schools and Centres may implement additional and complementary verification procedures, as they see fit.
  3. Where a student receives a failing overall mark and grade in an Arts-owned unit, but has not compelted all assessment items for the unit, confirmation of the student’s fail grade (as per 2.1 and 2.2, above) is not required.
  4. As a corollary to these verification procedures, and as per University Unit Assessment Procedures (Item H.4), assessment in non-written performance-based tasks worth 30% or more of the overall mark and grade (including aural and oral language assessment, musical or theatrical performances, and class presentations) should make use of suitable verification procedures, such as: sound and/or video recording; initial assessment by more than one examiner; or, other defensible form of verification. Performance items that are assessed by more than one person are deemed to have been subject to review, for the purpose of items 2a and 2b, above.

D. Grievance procedures for ineligible items

  1. Students who have concerns about the assessment of items that are ineligible for review or remark may submit a grievance to the Faculty Grievance Officer, as per University policy and procedures.
  2. Prior to contacting the Faculty Grievance Officer, and as per University procedures, the student must attempt informal resolution of their concerns with relevant staff members (e.g., supervisors, course conveners and academic leaders in Schools and Centres, etc.).
