Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency Professor Dr Boediono today delivered an oration on education, innovation and the importance of the Indonesia-Australia relationship at Monash University, as part of his official visit to Australia.
The visit by Vice President Boediono, who holds a Master of Economics degree from Monash, coincided with the announcement that Monash University will lead a new Australia-Indonesia Centre focused on strengthening linkages between the two nations.
To be based at the University’s Caulfield campus in Melbourne and with nodes at the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, the University of Sydney, and Australia’s peak scientific and research agency, CSIRO, it is envisaged that a twinned Indonesian network will be announced in the near future.
Acting Chief Executive of the new centre, Professor Paul Ramadge, a Vice Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow at Monash, said the centre would bring together government, industry and academia, with areas of interest likely to include food and agriculture, health and wellbeing, infrastructure and smart cities, and water.
“One of the new centre’s goals will be to identify shared national challenges and, through highly collaborative research, put forward solutions,” Professor Ramadge said.
The official visit is being supported by Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the Victorian Government and the Global Foundation.
Earlier this year, an honorary degree was conferred on Vice President Boediono by Monash University at a ceremony at the Vice Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Vice President Boediono graduated from Monash University in 1972 with a Master of Economics. He has studied alongside, and built relationships, with some of the University’s pioneering Indonesian scholars – Herb Feith, John Legge and Jamie Mackie.
His Excellency Professor Dr Boediono became Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2009.
He is acknowledged as a reform-minded Minister who played a key role in restoring post-crisis macroeconomic stability in Indonesia. He has long and extensive links to Australia and is widely respected in the international donor and business community for his many achievements in government and academia.
