Gough Whitlam: His Time (MUP 2012), the second volume of Professor Jenny Hocking’s two-volume biography of the former Labor Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, has been shortlisted for the 2013 Queensland Literary Awards, one of 5 books shortlisted for the University of Queensland Non-Fiction Award.

Details of the short-lists and the judges comments can be found at:

“This definitive biography takes us behind the political intrigue to reveal a devastated Whitlam and his personal struggle in the aftermath of the dismissal, during the unfulfilled years that followed and his eventual political renewal as Australia’s ambassador to UNESCO. And of course, through the highs and the lows of his decades of public life Whitlam depended absolutely on the steadfast support of the love of his life, Margaret. For this is also the story of a remarkable marriage and an enduring partnership.”

The first volume, Gough Whitlam: A Moment in History, was published by Melbourne University Publishing in 2008 and was short-listed in several national literary awards including the  Margarey Medal for Biography and the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.
