PhD student Joe O’Connor wins PBS Young Elder of Jazz award

JoeOConnorThe Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music are pleased to announce that Ph.D. student, pianist and composer Joe O’Connor has won the fifth annual PBS Young Elder of Jazz Award in 2016.

The award is run in collaboration with PBS 106.7FM and Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and recognises a mid-career jazz musician who is making significant contributions to the field. The award provides $10,000 for a new work to be commissioned and presented at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

With the funds, O’Connor plans to premiere a new work entitled ‘Confrontations’, a piece that explores music created by his trio (alongside James McLean and Marty Holoubek) and Melbourne-based trumpeter Scott Tinkler. The work will be a suite consisting of six parts, composed under the mentorship of Tinkler.

“I am honoured and excited to have been chosen as the recipient of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz commission” O’Connor says, “I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the composition process and workshopping the new pieces early next year.”

Congratulations Joe!
