Monash Music Researcher Awarded Prestigious Grant

Dr Gay Breyley, an adjunct research fellow in the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, has been awarded a prestigious grant from the Australian Research Council.

The DECRA (Discovery Early Career Researcher Award), valued at $373,391, will fund a three-year study entitled ‘A historical study of modern Iran and its diaspora through the music, career and cultural significance of pop star Googoosh’.

Since their inception in 2011, only four DECRA grants have been awarded to musicologists; Dr Breyley’s grant brings to two the number of DECRA grant-holders at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music.

Robert Burke, head of the Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music, said ‘Dr Breyley’s award is a significant personal achievement for an outstanding scholar and further cements the School as a leader in cutting-edge music research in Australia’.
