Duty of Care

We all have a “duty-of-care” to ourselves and each other – in simple terms, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of the people around you.

The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music has the responsibility of providing a duty-of-care to those who occupy the building or attend a function.

Our duty-of-care requires us to ensure a safe working environment, that safe work practices are undertaken and that a satisfactory initial response to an emergency, an incident, or an injury can be fulfilled.

This document, and the procedures and information it outlines, offers methods of operation particular to the SZCSoM, and the PAC, that comply with Monash OHS Policy and/or the Media and Entertainment Arts Alliance’ “Safety Guidelines for the Entertainment Industry”. If abided by, it will ensure staff and students conduct their operations within the Centre in a manner that supports their duty-of-care to their colleagues. As the Monash University OHS Policy states, the responsibility for implementing OHS policy and procedures rests with staff and students; that means everybody.

We all have a duty-of-care to each other. By only doing the tasks that we have been deemed competent to do, in a manner that we have been trained to do, we will conduct our activities in a manner that supports our obligation of a duty-of-care.

No student or member of staff should attempt an activity unless they have been properly trained to undertake it. If you are unsure about what you about to attempt, DO NOT DO IT. If you need advice, or wish to ask a question, consult with the PAC Resources/Technical Production staff.

Anyone deliberately ignoring safety procedures will be banned from participating in practical activities.
