ABC reporter Simon Galletta had a tough initiation in journalism.

Simon, who recently graduated after finishing his degree at Monash University, faced some challenging experiences when the ABC’s Melbourne bureau offered him casual work during the 2015-20-15 festive season.

“I started working with the  ABC as an intern during my last semester of university,” Simon said.

“Following this, I was offered  casual radio work over the New Year, and was thrown in the deep end when the Wye River fires broke out on Christmas Day.

“I managed to pull through, and continued to work for the next five months before being offered a job as a regional reporter in Sale.”

Simon said it was important that interns were prepared for any situation in news.

“If you get a chance to be in a newsroom, be prepared,” Simon advised.

“Have stories you can pitch and always take the initiative.”
