Nick Parkin recognised in VC awards for outstanding teaching

Monash University journalism lecturer Nick Parkin has been recognised by Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner for his innovative work in journalism education.

Mr Parkin was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (Early Career) at a ceremony on November 20.

His innovative educational approach has created sought-after journalism units, both on campus and overseas, though exciting and challenging studies in Asia.

Monash’s Head of Media, Film and Journalism Associate Professor Mia Lindgren said students consistently rated Mr Parkin as one of the University’s top educators. 

“Not only is Nick himself award-winning – through his partnership with industry – many of his students win awards for the journalism they produce in his classes,” Associate Professor Lindgren said.

Mr Parkin said it was an “absolute honour to be recognised in this way”. 

“The School of Media, Film and Journalism has always been highly supportive of my innovative and experimental ideas when it comes to furthering journalism education,” Mr Parkin said.

“It should also be emphasised that this award would not have been possible without the outstanding achievements of our journalism students. From reporting in rural Cambodia, India and Nepal, to using their smartphones to cover local events in Melbourne, it is these students who have put my teaching ideas into practice and proven the effectiveness the education model. 

“Their amazing work has gone on to win multiple awards and many are now working as professional news reporters.”

Mr Parkin has used smartphones and social media apps, to revolutionise journalism teaching in the classroom in which students gather and report news and create their assessment tasks. 

Partnering with non-government organisation, Engineers Without Borders, Mr Parkin jointly ran “engineering and journalism” study tours in Cambodia, India and Nepal, funded by grants via New Colombo Plan scholarships from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), in which his students engaged with NGOs to report on humanitarian issues. 

Mr Parkin also developed the Inaugural Global Hong Kong Field School, which involved students travelling to the Asian media capital to explore why it is the big draw for news companies from around the globe.
