Monash University journalism graduates have shown their expertise and leadership in media companies in Australia and worldwide.

As Monash students and graduates, they have won Walkley and Quill awards in the competitive Australian media industry.

Walkley-award winners include Annika Smethurst (Herald Sun federal political reporter), Ashley Argoon (Herald Sun reporter) and Holly Humphreys.

The Melbourne Press Club’s Quill winners include Sam Landsberger (Herald Sun sports reporter), Annika Smethurst (Herald Sun politics reporter), Julian Trantino (Carlton Football Club), Jenan Taylor (Tribal Media) and Jenny Denton (Melbourne Press Club producer).

Monash journalism student Jack Paynter, a 2015 Quill Student of the Year finalist, has been shortlisted for the 2016 Young Walkley awards.

Paynter, who is studying his final year of journalism, works at the Herald Sun as an editorial assistant.

Monash Head of Journalism Associate Professor Philip Chubb said students also had secured media jobs other than in mainstream metropolitan journalism.

Examples include communications/PR, production for TV and radio, content production for websites, digital news, print/digital storytelling, marketing, social media, regional/suburban newspapers/TV/radio, account management, politics, photography.

Examples of employers other than mainstream metropolitan outlets include: Channel News Asia, One News NZ, Nova 100, Croc Media sports presenter, Austereo, AFL, AFL Players’ Association, Collingwood FC, Microsoft, Fox Sports, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Business Spectator, Cricket Australia, Yahoo 7, The Conversation, Australian Jewish News, Toyota, National Gallery of Victoria, Kingston City Council, Optus, Triple M, Latrobe Valley Express, Bendigo Advertiser, Getty, Football Federation of Victoria.

There are many other examples.

“I am extremely proud of the fact that we are producing both undergraduate and Masters students ready to hit the road and, in many cases, walk into great jobs,’’ Assoc Prof Chubb said.

Assoc Prof Chubb said many students also had interned at the Herald Sun, The Age, the ABC and many other media organisations.
