Global Correspondent unit launches in Europe

Students enjoy dinner at the Piazza Duomo in Prato.

Take two groups of students at universities situated at the opposite side of the globe, put them at Monash Prato in northern Italy and mix in a few days at EU institutions in Brussels and you get Global Correspondent.

The inaugural version of the new international story telling course, Global Correspondent, was held at the Monash University study centre in Prato in northern Italy and Brussels, Belgium during July 2017.

Associate Professor Johan Lidberg, from the Journalism department in the School of Media, Film and Journalism, taught the unit in Europe.

After two years of planning and dealing with the challenges of inter-university logistics, a group of students form Monash University and Gothenburg University (Sweden) came together in Prato.

The international group made the course dynamic and exciting. After learning about storytelling, producing the Prato and Florence stories and pitching stories on reporting the EU, migration and the environment and climate change, the course travelled onto Brussels where the group visited the EU Parliament and the publication Politico Europe.

Several of the students continued their travels in Europe after the course and will produce stories from various parts of Europe.
