‘Orthodoxy and Controversy’ Launched

Clare Monagle’s monograph Orthodoxy and Controversy in Twelfth-Century Religious Discourse was recently launched at a celebration in the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies. Prof Barbara Caine (Sydney) and Prof Constant Mews (Monash) spoke warmly of Clare and the work she has produced in this book, which brings to light the importance of Peter Lombard’s Sentences. ‘The Lombard’ was one of the most-read textbooks of theology in medieval Europe, but his status as common text has led to a gradual fading away of the memory of his once controversial reputation as a thinker. Clare’s book brings that controversy back to light and life.
