Historical Geography Week

Detail from the Gough Map, Bodleian Library. One of the resources brought to life by a collaborative project involving Keith Lilley, recent visitor to the CMRS.

The CMRS recently played host to Keith Lilley (Queen’s University, Belfast), a historical geographer with particular interest in medieval mapping and urban planning. Keith gave a successful series of seminars in the CMRS and at Melbourne University. His visit provoked fruitful discussion of the influence of the ‘spatial turn’ on medieval and early modern studies generally, ways of integrating medieval European studies with the medieval pasts of other regions and other periods, and means of applying digital technologies to historical and geographical questions.

Keith’s book City and Cosmos is available in the Matheson Library, and a number of his collaborative digital mapping projects can be accessed online for research and entertainment.
