Essay Prize for Lauren McAlary

Student Lauren McAlary has won the First Year Essay Prize in History for her piece on humanism in the Renaissance. Many congratulations!

Lauren summarised her essay thus:

Though the humanism movement itself had continental appeal, values such as civic humanism and political participation were particularly Italian phenomena, owing to the urbanised, communal structure of society. The fascinations and pursuits of the Italian the humanist movement not only reflected the values of Italian political, social and spiritual society but actively facilitated the efflorescence of these values, allowing for a new-found introspection into classical ideals and their place in Renaissance society.
