Emma Nicholls (right), who recently completed a highly commended MA at Monash in the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to complete her PhD in the UK. Emma will take up her position later in 2014, becoming a member of Clare Hall, Cambridge.

Emma describes her doctoral project as follows:

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Florentines began writing like never before. For reasons we do not yet fully understand, the proliferation of libri di famiglia and other kinds of ‘ego documents,’ as they are called, seems to have been more marked in Florence than in any other city. My PhD asks whether this changed habit of writing represents a shift in mentality. If so, was it only those with the means to write who took part in it? Or did a wider section of society participate through other cultural mediums?

CMRS staff and students wish Emma every success  in her exciting new venture!
