MONASH ASIA INSTITUTE BULLETIN AUGUST 2016

MAI BULLETIN AUGUST 2016

From the MAI Director’s Desk

Second semester has just begun. Please get ready for exciting events in August. We will have seminars
on Gender and sexual diversity in China and India; Malaysian gender politics; Apocalyptic fictions in
Japan as well as the screening of Sri Lankan film, “The Singing Pond”. We are also pleased to
announce that MAI will launch a new public seminar series in September, “From Asia Literacy to
Australia Literacy”. Jointly organised with the Immigration Museum, Melbourne, the seminar series
will discuss how we can further advance Australia’s engagement with Asia by rethinking Australian
culture, society and identity in ways to go beyond a bipolarised Australia-Asia perception. In October,
Japanese Studies Centre will organize a conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the
teaching program in Japanese Studies at Monash University. Last but not the least, the call for papers
for MAI’s 2017 international conference is now open, which will intensively discuss innovative
potentials of trans-Asian approaches. Please check the detail of all events and information in this
bulletin and the MAI webpage.
