Is the ‘public’ still a useful or valid concept in relation to doing media and cultural research in Asia? In this seminar our three panellists, Koichi Iwabuchi, Gil Soo-Han and Dan Edwards, revisit meanings of publicness in Asia and their particular (and problematic) applications in different research contexts.

Koichi Iwabuchi (Professor of Media and Cultural Studies and Director
of the Monash Asia Institute), ‘”Publicness” trouble‘

Gil Soo-Han (Associate Professor of Communications and Media Studies),
‘Public sphere vs. sphericules: What is in operation in multicultural societies and why?‘

Dan Edwards (PhD candidate and journalist), ‘Why the public sphere
concept is still useful in a contemporary Chinese context’
