An Australia-Singapore Friendship Concert:- Our Island Home

Our Island Home: An Australia-Singapore Friendship Concert

2015 marks 50 years of bilateral ties between Australia and Singapore and Singapore’s 50th anniversary. Our Island Home celebrates this significant milestone and features an 8-piece multi-racial and multi-cultural ensemble which includes the tabla and erhu fully integrated with a traditional Western ensemble. Audience members will also be treated to a visual presentation of scenes from Singapore alongside music written by commissioned Singaporean composer John Sharpley.

The music commemorates both the special diversity of Singapore as a migrant nation and also its unique position as the crossroads of East and West. It also hints at the sound of a possible future for Australia as an increasingly diverse multicultural nation.  All the music and programming draws upon the experience of both cities to explore artistically the meaning of home – what it means and how it is built – for implanted multicultural migrant nations such as ours.
