What level of French should I study?

Have you studied French before?

If you have never studied French before

You should enrol in the introductory level. For first year students, the codes are:

  • ATS1061 French beginner 1 (Semester 1)
  • ATS1062 French beginner 2 (Semester 2)

If you have done VCE, IB or Australian High School Certificate in French last year*

Post-VCE or equivalent

Depending on your results at the Online Entry Level Test you will enrol either at intermediate or proficient level:

  • ATS2063 French intermediate 1 (Semester 1)
  • ATS2064 French intermediate 2 (Semester 2)
  • ATS2065 French proficient 1 (Semester 1)
  • ATS2066 French proficient 2 (Semester 2)

After doing so, you will receive a recommendation about what unit to enrol in. To enrol in Intermediate or Proficient level, you need to complete a manual enrolment.

Please note that a diagnostic test will be run in the first week of classes to confirm that you have chosen the appropriate level.

If you have studied French at another institution (not at VCE level),  or not last year

If any of the following applies to you:

  • You have lived in France for a period of several months or more
  • You have studied French at another institution or overseas
  • You have studied French at high school in Australia but finished at Year 10, or below.

please take the online entry level test.

After taking the test you will receive a recommendation about what unit to enrol in.
