What level of Japanese should I study?

Have you studied Japanese before?

For more information on the content of each level, please see:
Japanese program content

If you wish to discuss your options further, please contact the Japanese Studies coordinator: see the Japanese Studies Handbook (right hand side of the page) for name and contact details of the current coordinator.

If you have never studied Japanese before

You should enrol in the introductory level. For first year students, the codes are:

  • ATS1141 Japanese Introductory 1 (semester 1)
  • ATS1142  Japanese Introductory 2 (semester 2)

If you wish to start your studies in semester 2 with ATS1142 Japanese Introductory 2 (i.e. without taking ATS1141), please take the online entry level test (click here for details) to confirm that you have sufficient ability. If you do not, please enrol in ATS1141 next time it is offered.

If you have done VCE, IB or Australian High School Certificate in Japanese

We recommend that you enrol at the intermediate level:

  • ATS2143 Japanese intermediate 1 (semester 1)
  • ATS2144 Japanese intermediate 2 (semester 2)

The intermediate units include some revision of VCE material but at a more academic level, and quickly move on to new content.

You cannot enrol in these units by yourself through WES: you need to request ‘manual enrolment’. Please click here for instructions on how to do this.

If you completed VCE or equivalent more than a year ago, or if you wish to enrol directly in ATS2144 (semester 2) without completing ATS2143, please take the Online Entry Level Test to confirm that your Japanese is at the appropriate level. If your skills have improved or deteriorated since VCE, we may recommend enrolling at a different level.

If you achieved exceptional results at VCE level (e.g. a score of 45+ at VCE Level and/or 10-12 months exchange in Japan), you could possibly enrol at the Proficient level:

  • ATS2145/ATS3145 Japanese proficient 1 (semester 1)
  • ATS2146/ATS3146 Japanese proficient 2 (semester 2)

If you are a third year student, choose codes ATS3145/ATS3146

If you wish to be considered for the Proficient level, please take the Online Entry Level Test.

If you did a VCE equivalent interstate, please see VTAC table of equivalence to convert your score to a VCE score.

  • You have completed Japanese at VCE level or equivalent, but more than one year ago.
  • You have lived in Japan for a period of several months or more
  • You have studied Japanese at another institution overseas
  • You have taken the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

Online entry level test

If you are seeking to enrol in a level other than ATS1141 Japanese Introductory 1 (beginners) or ATS2143 Japanese Intermediate 1 (post-VCE), please take the online entry level test. After completing the test you will receive a score and recommendation by e-mail message. When you receive this message, please contact the coordinator of the recommended level to request permission to enrol. Coordinators’ names and contact details are shown on the handbook page for each unit (linked above).

Manually enrolling in Japanese units

All Japanese language units other than ATS1141/ATS1141 (Japanese Introductory 1 and 2) require ‘manual enrolment’. This simply means that you cannot enrol yourself through WES, but will need a coursework officer to enrol you. To do so, please go to Arts Student Services with evidence of your VCE results or equivalent (if seeking enrolment in ATS2142/ATS2143 Japanese Intermediate 1/2), or an email message from the coordinator of the unit you wish to enrol in (if seeking enrolment at any other level). If you cannot come to campus in person, you can request enrolment by submitting an online enquiry via ask.monash attaching your VCE result or other evidence.
