Textbooks:

[Proficient 1: Chapters 1-4, Proficient 2: Chapters 5-8]
2) TOBIRA: Power Up Your KANJI: 800 Basic KANJI as a Gateway to Advanced
Japanese [Proficient 1: Chapters 1-4, Proficient 2: Chapters 5-8]

Prior to these units:

  1. Kanji level: 300 characters
  2. Vocabulary: 1100 words
  3. Grammar: refer to Introductory 1 & 2 and Intermediate 1 & 2 content overviews

Differences from Intermediate 1 & 2:

  1. Japanese Proficient 1 and 2 are not organized based on the accumulation of grammar points.
  2. Proficient 1 & 2 builds on the grammar taught in Introductory 1 & 2 and Intermediate 1 & 2, introducing more advanced grammar at the same time. Importantly, the focus is on application of grammar in conjunction with pragmatic expressions and more academic contexts. Students are expected to expand reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, applying what they have developed.
  3. Proficient 1 & 2 are organized topically.

Cultural topics

  1. Proficient 1: Geography, martial arts and sports, technology, etc.
  2. Proficient 2: Popular culture, traditional culture, religion in Japan, etc.

Research skills

  1. Searching information in Japanese and using online tools to read authentic texts in Japanese
  2. Basic skills in academic writing in Japanese: citation, references
  3. Interviewing in Japanese

Grammar

  1. Solidifying the basic grammar built during students’ previous study (refer to Introductory and Intermediate unit content
  2. Knowledge of complex sentence structure to analyse and understand reading texts
  3. Conjunctions to produce coherent sentences and paragraphs

Reception – Listening and reading

  1. Comprehending long texts (1,200-2000 characters) in each lesson
  2. Reading and listening to semi-authentic and authentic texts – articles, dialogues, autobiographies, manga, myths, etc.

Sample Reading

  1. Listening for picking up various types of information including general ideas, key points, etc.
  2. Understanding lectures in Japanese
  3. Strategies – using schema and guessing, speed reading and extensive reading, using a dictionary, online tools, analysing texts

Spoken interaction and production including sociolinguistic knowledge, discourse, and communication strategies

  1. Ability to manage speech levels properly: politeness, gendered language, written and spoken language, interpersonal relations and language
  2. Communication strategies to sustain a conversation: asking for clarification, aizuchi, fillers, responding quickly, etc.
  3. Colloquial language to understand popular culture such as onomatopoeia
  4. Stating an opinion, giving an explanation, telling a story, managing a presentation, etc.

Written interaction and production

  1. Writing connecting sentences and paragraphs
  2. Choosing an appropriate style of writing
  3. Writing an email in Japanese
  4. Writing a 800-1,000 character essay unassisted in an exam setting, and a 1600-2000 character essay assisted with dictionaries and references
  5. Kanji: Approx 300 new kanji to be introduced (150 each in Proficient 1 and 2; Total – 600 kanji

Vocabulary

Approximately 350 words will be introduced in Japanese Proficient 1.

Approximately 350 words will be introduced in Japanese Proficient 2.
