Journalism students from Monash University will provide breaking news coverage of this year’s New News conference on a website linked to the Melbourne Press Club. In a unique collaboration, three Monash University journalism Honours students, Bridget Fitzgerald, Patrick Hutchens and Gina Xing will join three journalism students from Melbourne University’s Centre for Advanced Journalism to report the conference which runs on August 24 and 25.
The New News conference, run in partnership with the Melbourne Writers’ Festival, is sponsored by Melbourne Press Club and the Centre for Advanced Journalism. Monash University is the key sponsor of the Melbourne Press Club. In a brief comment on the New News website, Monash University journalism lecturer Bill Birnbauer said: “We are in an era of transition: no-one knows what the future models for journalism will look like. No-one has figured out a viable model to fund quality journalism. No-one knows what a journalist will be in 20 years time.
