Knowledge and skills in communication are increasingly valued across a wide range of industries, particularly at the management level, and significant growth is anticipated over the next five to ten years. For example, the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) estimates that internet publishing and broadcasting will grow by more than 18% from 2011 to 2015-16, and that advertising services will grow by 24%.

 What our graduates say

Upon finishing my degree in 2007, I have since moved to Sydney to further my career in film and TV. I have worked at Hopscotch Films, and last year started in acquisitions at BBC Worldwide. My analysis and critical thinking were enhanced through my research project, which definitely comes through in my work. The degree overall gave me the skill and ability to support my passion.

Lauren Katsikidis, Television Acquisitions Assistant, BBC Worldwide

I completed my study in 2010 after receiving the Australian Leadership Awards 2009-2010. Having a Masters degree in Communications and Media Studies from Monash gave me knowledge to work in the field of broadcasting and communications. Furthermore, through an internship program in ABC Asia Pacific Centre in Melbourne, I was fortunate to experience an international working environment. Now, I work as News Anchor at SCTV, one of Indonesia’s Best Television Stations and serve as the Environment Ambassador of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia.

Valerina Daniel (News Anchor, SCTV, Indonesia)

The Master of Communications and Media Studies truly enabled me to expand my knowledge across the media landscape, both nationally and internationally. The postgraduate degree was a great stepping stone in allowing me to successfully land a position in Telstra’s Internal Corporate Communications Team. More recently, I was promoted to a Brand Marketing Manager, having the ability to work on exciting advertising campaigns with many key media agencies. I have had the opportunity to practically apply the knowledge I’ve attained into a working environment across media, communications, advertising, PR, marketing and social media.

Melissa Christidis (Brand Manager, Telstra)

My journey at Monash was a fantastic one. I chose to study the Masters in Communication and Media Studies purely based on my own interests, and a wish to work for a media related industry. It was a great experience because not only have I learnt a lot from my lecturers over the 1.5 years, it has also pointed me the right direction to fulfil my dreams. Presently I am working for a media research company, and I am happy at where I am. I have no regrets choosing this course, and would strongly recommend it to anyone aspiring to a future in the media and communications industry.

Clarice Lau (Media and Editorial Analyst, Millward Brown)

This company is 150 years old and I happen to turn up at a time when they are changing their entire business model. Not only that but I am in the thick of the strategy… Let’s just say I’m equipped to cope and I think I have many exciting opportunities ahead of me. Much of this is due to your course. Thanks for your support … I wouldn’t be able to speak so confidently with the CEO of the Business Council of Australia or the CEO of Mirvac without my time at Monash.

Gabrielle Kopke (National Marketing Manager, Corrs, Chambers, Westgarth)

I completed the Master of Communications and Media Studies in 2004 and have since been employed as a broadcast monitor for Media Monitors. Last year I commenced employment with the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Had I not completed the Master of Communications and Media Studies at Monash, I would not be where I am today.

Renee Lustman (Policy Analyst, Australian Communications and Media Authority)
