Vincy U at the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources

Name: Vincy U
Course: Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability
Currently: Finishing my Masters Program
Internship Placement: DEDJTR

My placement at Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR), in conjunction with Monash Industry Team Incentive (MITI) consisted of presenting the findings from data analysis and topics for future research for the enhancement of “Optimising nutrient intake, cow welfare and soil health in large dairy herds” project.  I completed analysis of data that described the problems on farms with large herds.
The possible benefits of redesigning a farm, such as the minimisation of walking distance and time off pasture were also discussed. The use of Unmanned Aircraft’s and GIS modelling were observed and presented to promote precise data and information collection on the farms.

During this placement, I was able to apply my research skills and use various databases in literature review to be able to determine the optimal farm layout. Software such as Microsoft Excel, R and ArcGIS were used in this project.
I worked with two other interns and collaborated with many other colleagues in the office, I practised my interpersonal skills, problem solving and data analysis skills during the project.

During my time in Ellinbank, I visited a farm in Shepparton to interact with the farmers that worked there.  I also had a tour of the farm at DEDJTR and I got to compare the differences between the two farms.  Due to my placement’s location, I stayed in accommodation in Warragul, so I could enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I am currently in my final semester of my Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability.  This placement has opened my eyes to more opportunities that I did not imagine because there are so many areas in agriculture where environmental management could be applied.
