Project Title: Creative Spaces Melbourne



Brief description of the research project: To conduct an audit or creative workspace provision in Melbourne CBD and Inner city suburbs. These include arts spaces, maker/ fab labs, co-working spaces, design/ fashion spaces. These should be co-working spaces with short, flexible lets. The research needs to identify these spaces and sort into relevant types categories; identify rent levels and services; target businesses (if any); and the type of ownership (public sector, not-for-profit, private, co-operative). The research will then identify some key spaces for more in-depth case study work. The research is part of an ongoing research project for the research unit Culture Media Economy and will feed into a Linkage Proposal.

Position description/Role of intern: Conduct the above research tasks under instruction from the supervisor, through internet search and on-site observation and data-gathering. The student will be expected to identify case studies in association with the supervisor.

Key duties/deliverables:

  •  A report consisting of a table charting the different available workspaces;
  •  A Google map identifying the location of the workspaces
  • A report (4k) identifying key case studies – such as a leading workspace provider, a city/ state led workspace, an historical community arts initative etc.
  • A report (2k) on Melbourne’s Creative Space initiative and other public sector programs to develop creative spaces in the city for the creative sector.

Any special requirements/comments: some understanding of the agenda around creative industries and creative cities.

Estimated hours: 200 hours

1. The students should meet the eligibility criteria to enrol in ATS3129 Arts Internship (12CP) unit (completed 96 credit points and have a distinction average)

2. Check with Arts Student services if you have room in your degree for this unit.
