Brief description of the research project

The Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub is a new initiative that is being established within the School of Media, Film and Journalism. It aims to bring the research resources of a University to the world of climate communication. In doing so it will build toward media and policy infrastructure that adequately addresses climate change in Australia. The power of the climate communication of politicians, news outlets, social media, non-government organisations and climate activists will be evaluated to understand the ‘media ecology’ of climate change communication in Australia.  In each case connecting researchers and practitioners is central in evaluating climate messages.

This research will deliver insights that can build the capacity for governments, businesses, NGO’s and journalists to improve their climate literacy and climate communication skills.

The research will also be an aggregator of existing social research on climate, identifying gaps in the research and delivering knowledge which bridges those gaps.

The Research Hub is in its establishment phase, and is to be crowd-funded with the advice of Development Managers in External Relations from the Office of the President and the Vice-Chancellor. The Research Hub, will be the only one of its kind in Australia, and the first time a research entity has been crowd-funded at Monash.
