Melbourne Water – Sustainability Internships

Eligible Students: Masters of Environmental Management and Sustainability, Master of Environment and Sustainability
Intake Period: Semester 1, 2018
Duration & Days of Attendance: 1-2 days a week

Melbourne Water is a statutory authority owned by the Victorian Government. It is their role to manage and protect Melbourne’s major water resources on behalf of the community.  Their ‘enhancing life and liveability’ strategic vision and rigorous research and water data informs our services, guaranteeing the supply of affordable, high-quality water, reliable sewerage, healthy waterways, integrated drainage and flood management.

2 Intern positions available:
Strategic Planning Intern:
Melbourne Water has been nominated as the lead organisation to prepare the Yarra Strategic Plan. The Plan will set out actions to achieve a 50 year Community Vision for the Yarra River. A key aspect of the Plan will be to ascertain how existing strategic directions in State and Local Government policies and strategies can be coordinated to achieve this vision. The Community Vision is currently under development and will be completed by December 2017. The Yarra Strategic Plan is due to be completed mid-2018.

  • Work with the Yarra Strategic Plan Knowledge Lead to review and summarise key strategic and policy references relating to the Yarra River.
  • Identify existing strategic and policy directions from these references that relate to the Community Vision for the Yarra River.
  • Assist the Knowledge Lead in summarising these strategic and policy directions and representing them in map form.
  • Conduct other research that assists in developing the content of the Yarra Strategic Plan. 

Skills required: Good research, analysis and writing skills

Liveability intern:
Melbourne Water (MW) manages Melbourne’s water supply catchments, removes and treats most of Melbourne’s sewage, and manages rivers and creeks and major drainage systems throughout the Port Phillip and Westernport region.  The Liveability team works across MW to facilitate compatible community use of MW managed land and waterways.

The intern will assist the Liveability team in 2 key areas.

  1. The management of the “Our Space Your Place” (OSYP) tool which allows the community to apply to use MW land for community assets/activities through:
  • The development of communication/promotional materials and events for the application
  • Analysis of the GIS data used within the OSYP tool to improve usability.
  1. Conducting a review of the teams Liveability Seed Funding program to determine the programs effectiveness and make recommendations about its implementation into the future.
  • Interviews with stakeholders
  • Data analysis
  • Report writing

Skills required: 

  • Strong written and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop plans/concepts with limited direction
  • Interest or background in social science and community participation
  • GIS skills preferable but not essential
