History Internship with Glen Eira Historical Society

Duration: Minimum of 144 hours between August 2017 – November 2017 (2 days a week, negotiable)
Intake: Semester 2

 Undergraduate History students

This is an excellent opportunity for students  to have some hands-on experience with the Glen Eira Historical Society.

The Society was formed in 1972 as the Caulfield Historical Society and changed its name to the Glen Eira Historical Society following the changes made to Council Boundaries in 1994.

The Society is committed to the capture, preservation and dissemination of material on the history of Glen Eira and its residents.

As a result of the labours of past and present members, help from the Council and members of the public, an invaluable collection of material on the history of the area has been captured and is available for researchers as well the general public.

The Project:
Students will complete this internship in three stages working in different roles building their knowledge in the different aspects of working in the field of history.

Stage 1: Data Entry

Data entry of catalogued items  Training and experience with data entry of catalogued items is a preparation for cataloguing work in Stage 2.4 x3 hr. sessions or équivalent

Stage 2: Cataloguing

Title

Brief description

Analysis and recording of files for the archive using society procedures.  Training and supervision are provided throughout the project.6 X 3hr. sessions or equivalent.

Stage 3: Research of Items in the Collection

Brief description

Investigation of the origins and significance of selected items in the Collection Examination of designated items in the Collection such as artefacts.  After training in Society procedures for this, students will be expected to conduct research both within the Society’s own sources and externally to prepare a report on the origins and significance of those items.  They will then design a display for the item, drawing from the research report, for a general audience.
