American Studies

350-america-studiesThe American Studies area of focus will equip you with knowledge about one of the most dynamic regions in the world. An in-depth understanding of the United States is crucial for the 21st century global citizen. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the United States has been a key global actor in the international political arena. Units focus on the growth and limits of the world’s last superpower, or by way of contrast, you can also study the disparate cultures of Southern and Latin America through units that emphasise the often overlooked but important cultures and histories of the United States’ southern neighbours, the combined populations of which more than double the population of the United States. Flows of trade, money and people are fraught questions in today’s globalized world, and by choosing this stream you will be equipped to make sense of what are often highly contested positions on these issues. The relationship between global trade and impoverishment and prosperity is a key aspect of this stream, and you will explore this link and the impact of globalisation through the lenses of anthropology, economics, bioethics and philosophy. Conflict & Justice

350-conflict-justiceAs has been demonstrated many times during the 20th and 21st centuries, in order for states to rise out of the destruction of war, some recognition, understanding and acceptance of responsibility for the horrors of the past is required. The Conflict & Justice area of study will ask you to question the place of ethics and justice in war and its aftermath. Through the study of specific conflicts including those in Rwanda, South Africa, and Cambodia amongst others, you will investigate the human impact of conflict and genocide in the immediate, and global, communities.
