The purpose of the report was to provide a description of Australian private prisons over time. This involves an overview of private prisons in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. The report will further contribute to the research on the privatisation of prisons internationally by understanding the ‘State of the Nation’ in an Australian context.
The first phase of the project examined the costs, performance and accountability of private prisons across Australia. The second phase of the project is ongoing, and involves interviews with senior policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders regarding the findings of the report.
