    Research Supervision

    For students seeking supervision for honours theses, History Department staff offer supervision in a number of Research areas including (but not limited to):

    This list is neither exhaustive nor exclusive. Not all staff will be available in any given year or semester. Staff members’ interests range widely, and students who wish to work on topics not covered in this list can possibly be accommodated. Dissertation topics should be discussed by interview with the Honours Coordinator.

    Course Overview

    The History Honours Program involves intensive advanced study combining coursework with a research project, or dissertation, in which the student engages in independent research on an approved topic under the supervision of a member of academic staff.

    Combined Honours

    Honours in History can be combined with other programs in our School and with other disciplines within the Faculty of Arts with permission & approval from the heads of all Departments/Programs. Arrangements for combined honours should be discussed with the Honours Coordinator.

    Awards

    Prizes are offered for the best thesis in History and for the best overall grade in History for the Honours year.

    The Ian Turner Memorial Prize

    Discipline: History
    School: School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies
    Prize: A$500
    Level: Fourth-year level, Honours students
    Description: Prize for the best Honours dissertation in history. Awarded by a panel consisting of the Head of School and one other staff member with responsibility for fourth-year level units from a short-list of dissertations drawn up at the Fourth-year level examiners’ meeting.

    The J.D. Legge Prize

    Discipline: History
    School: School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies
    Prize: A$500
    Level: Fourth-year level, Honours students
    Description: Prize for the best Fourth-year level student in history, as decided by the Fourth-year level examiners’ meeting.
