Master of Journalism

The Master of Journalism is for people who want to enter a career in journalism, and for working journalists who want to extend their skills to new areas and explore the intellectual basis of their practice.

Students will work with award-winning journalists and academics with strong industry links as they cultivate high level skills in research and reporting across all media – print, online, radio and video – and explore the role of the media in contemporary society.

Monash journalism graduates are smart, skilled and ready. Media employers seek them out, but their skills are also in demand in other industries including public relations, communication, editing, publishing, digital and video/audio production.

Future of Journalism

Philip Chubb, Head of the Journalism Department, and Gold Walkley winner, talks about the importance of journalism in our society:

“There is no more important job than journalism. It plays a crucial role by scrutinising and holding to account those in power and with influence; it exposes corruption and shed light on systemic failings. Its essence is in finding the truth and telling the story, whether in politics, fashion or sport… The field of interest is as irrelevant to the quality of the journalism as the medium through which the story is told.

As a Monash journalism graduate you will inform and shape the future. The only question is: what is the world you would like to create?”
