Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies

The Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies seeks to develop students’ skills in translation/interpreting in English and another language, and their awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation and interpreting.

There are three streams within the course:

  • Translation only: offered for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish
  • Combined interpreting and translation: offered for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish
  • Conference interpreting and translation: offered for Chinese, French, Indonesian, Japanese and Spanish.

Professional Internships

As part of the course, students are required to complete at least 80 hours of professional internship in both translation and interpreting. In doing so students gain real world experience, pick up useful skills to prepare them for the transition from university to the workplace, and have the opportunity to build networks and improve their graduate employability prospects.

NAATI Accreditation

The Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies is approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) at the Professional level (for translation and interpreting), and also at the Conference Interpreter level (for the conference interpreting stream).

Students who successfully complete the course and meet all the requirements can be recommended by Monash for NAATI accreditation.
