Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management

As the tourism industry continues to grow and expand throughout the world, sustainability is playing an increasingly influential role in how the industry is governed, managed and developed. There is a growing demand for well-qualified managers who not only have a broad and deep understanding of global business activity, but a clear insight into the consequences of planning and policy-making on the environment, society, culture and the economy. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) forecasts the growth rate for emerging economies will be double that of advanced economies in the next two decades, and that a sustainable industry can therefore play a significant role in achieving the millennium development goals.

By drawing on best practice in the tourism industry, policy governance and research, the Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between tourism and sustainable development. There is a particular emphasis on emerging economies and the development of small and medium sized enterprises within them. The course looks at how tourism can be compatible with the development of sustainable organisations, urban and rural development/regeneration, natural resource management and wildlife conservation, as well as the diversifying benefits from international and domestic tourism. It facilitates the development of skills and techniques to develop tourism policies and practices in a global setting and to manage tourism development and enterprises in the direction of more sustainable practice.

Special features of the course

The course is structured around core units, electives, a research thesis or an internship. There is a diverse range of electives to choose from enabling students to tailor the course to suit their own interests and career aspirations.

International field schools and exchange

Students are encouraged to take part of their studies overseas in order to broaden their understanding of the international market and the role that a sustainable tourism industry can play in emerging economies. The course provides the option of attending a partially funded intensive field school to study the patterns of development within an emerging economy in the Asia Pacific region such as Fiji, Vietnam or Cambodia.
