Master of International Relations

Our world is being shaped by big questions about global justice, war, peace, social movements, and inter-state relations. These questions help define what this Master of International Relations is all about. In short, this degree offers students a window into the diverse and dynamic world of politics in the 21st century.

Topics covered explore the security, ethical, legal, and economic dimensions of international relations. There are opportunities to examine key issues in foreign policy, world order, European studies, crisis management, and terrorism. In addition, new units in the gender, development, migration and governance aspects of global politics are being introduced.

A key aim of the degree is to help students make sense of this complexity by providing the analytical perspectives and skills needed to see both the ‘bigger picture’ and comprehend the detailed aspects of specific issues. All of our staff are active researchers who incorporate their expertise into the teaching program.

Students have the opportunity to study abroad, and to develop research interests in a number of areas. The Master of International Relations also offers a potential pathway into higher research degrees such as a PhD (subject to conditions).

Andrew is now senior program officer at the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) in Washington. The NTI is ‘a non-profit, non-partisan organisation with a mission to strengthen global security by reducing the risk of use and preventing the spread of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons and to work to build the trust, transparency, and security that are preconditions to the ultimate fulfillment of the [nuclear weapons] Non-Proliferation Treaty’s goals and ambitions’ (http://www.nti.org/).
