farzad-sharifianWelcome to Arts Research Graduate School (ARGS). ARGS, established in 2001, signals the Faculty’s commitment to providing graduate research education of the highest quality and a stimulating, supportive and professional environment for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates (masters by research and PhD). The Faculty of Arts is the second largest Faculty within the University, with more than 600 HDR students currently enrolled. The Faculty ranks very highly internationally with many of its academics recognized as pioneers in their fields of study. Many of our disciplines are ranked among the top 50 in the world and the majority of our disciplines are ranked as “Above or Well Above World Standard” by Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA). 

Our academics are highly committed to train high quality, internationally recognised scholars that are passionate about producing cutting edge research and keen to contribute to their fullest capacity to the betterment of society at large. Our Faculty’s HDR students are highly varied in terms of their national and cultural backgrounds, and they have diverse research interests and career objectives. However, they all share an intense enthusiasm for ground breaking scholarship, and a firm commitment to contribute to human condition. Research undertaken by candidates for the Masters and PhD is an important part of the University’s research effort and contributes significantly to Monash’s national and international reputation as a premier research institution. We are very proud of our HDR students’ achievements and their contributions to human knowledge.

Our students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of academic, professional development and collegial activities that take place within the Faculty and the University. In addition to these activities, we provide support for our students to participate in activities beyond Monash, such as in conferences and symposia hosted by other universities and in discipline-related or professional associations. The Faculty encourages such participation as an important means of academic and professional networking as well as for the dissemination of research findings. In general, we have a strong history of supporting HDR programs with a range of initiatives to help our candidates’ transition to academic research and to pursue various career paths.
