SGES Seminar Series

The limits of ‘ecosystem services’

Assoc. Prof. Christian Kull, School of Geography and Environmental Science

Wednesday 22nd May, 1-2pm

E457, Building 11, Clayton Campus

Abstract:

The dominance of “ecosystem services” as a guiding concept for environmental management since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment hides a number of implicit choices. In other words, it is a highly political concept.  Drawing on illustrative examples from different tropical forest contexts, I illustrate the choices made in defining, measuring, and valuing ecosystem services, all of which have ecological and political consequences.  I also show how, as a result, different interest groups can use this buzzword to justify interventions that are diametrically opposed.
