Peat, Pulp and Promises: An Indonesian Province Grapples with Low Carbon Growth

Dr. Craig Thorburn, School of Geography and Environmental Science

Wednesday 8th May, 1-2pm

E457, Building 11, Clayton Campus

Abstract:

The rapid expansion of the pulp and paper industry on the island of Sumatra calls into question Indonesia’s ability to meet its commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 26 per cent by 2030. After a brief overview of the pulp and paper industry in Indonesia, the talk focuses on the struggles of communities living on three small peat islands in Riau province slated for acacia plantation development.
