About

Welcome to the Centre for Geography and Environmental Science at Monash University.

Geography was one of the original disciplines when Monash University was established in the early 1960s. The Centre has always been a vibrant centre of undergraduate and graduate teaching and research and attracts highly motivated students and academics that care about the environment and are keen to make a positive difference through their research and careers. Geography and Environmental Science is fundamentally interdisciplinary, and this is reflected in both our academics and students who come from disciplines spanning across physical, biological, and social sciences, urban planning, engineering and archaeology. We work across Arts, Science, and Engineering faculties. We have some of the world’s leading researchers working in climate, water, international development, environmental governance, and indigenous cultural heritage management. We have an extremely successful and rigorous suite of Masters programs that have equipped students with the critical and practical skills for pursuing professional careers in environmental change and management across government, non-government, international and corporate sectors. Our doctoral graduates continue to do new exciting and useful research in universities and industry within Australia and across the world. Last year, which marked our 50th anniversary, we were ranked the first among Geography and Environmental Science schools and departments in the Group of Eight research universities in Australia.

There is much to celebrate about the Centre, but none more important than the achievements and excellence of our students. They make the Centre’s reputation, they bring their passion and desire to change the world, they inspire us to find new ways of teaching and research, they infect us with their enthusiasm to make the world a more sustainable and equitable place.

Welcome to our Centre!
