New appointment: Chair of Communications and Cultural Economy in Communications and Media Studies

Professor Justin O’Connor has been appointed as Chair of Communications and Cultural Economy in Communications and Media Studies. He begins his appointment in January 2013.

Justin O’Connor is a global leader in cultural industries research. He has held professorial positions at the University of Leeds and the Queensland University of Technology, and was the Director of the Institute for Popular Culture at Manchester Metropolitan University from 1995 to 2006. He was also the co-Director of the Cultural and Media Industries Research Centre at University of Leeds.

His most recent research work includes Towards a New Bilbao Effect (examining the MONA gallery) (ARC Linkage Grant); Soft Infrastructure, New Media and Creative Clusters: Developing Capacity in China and Australia (ARC Linkage Grant); Arts and Creative Industries (Australia Council commissioned grant/report). Justin’s most recent books include The Cultural and Creative Industries: a Literature Review (UK Arts Council, 2010); Creative Cities, Creative Economy: Asian European Perspectives (Springer, 2009), with two new books in preparation: After Creative Industries (Sage) and Culture and Economy in the New Shanghai (Routledge).

Professor O’Connor is without doubt one of the leading researchers in cultural industries/cultural economies, with particular expertise in music industries, art and Asian cultural industries. He has led global debates about notions of the cultural/creative city, and how and where communications and media industries fit within the turn to the cultural.

Professor O’Connor was also recently appointed as a UNESCO expert in their program ‘Strengthening the Governance of Culture in Developing Countries’ and is Visiting Professor in the Department of Humanities at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
