Oral and Written: Understanding the past
Monash University, Room E561, (Menzies Building) 20 Chancellors Walk, Clayton Campus
Event Date: Wed 04 Oct

The south west Gulf of Carpentaria is a place where Indigenous and colonial settler cultures persist with a particular vigour and contestation side-by-side. It is also a place where human knowledge is severely tested on a day-by-day basis. In this seminar I will explore oral and written traditions in such a place and in doing so touch upon the nature and meaning of knowledge in this part of Australia and the nature of knowledge and history itself.
